Meet Your NF-NY Colleagues

Meet Your NF - NY Colleagues
Our book club is as good as its members!  DC is a diverse city, we all come from different backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints.  As a goal of NF-NY is too provide a social atmosphere - meet some of your colleagues!
Note: All information was provided by members, with their permission.  If you would like any information changed or deleted, please send me an email.

Joyce - Hailing from NC, I originally moved into the area to attend University of Maryland, College Park.  Dupont has been my home for the last 4+ years, but have only recently started to live in DC on a "full-time" basis.  George Clooney's character in Upon in the Air, used to be my life - I worked for a global consulting firm & travelled on a weekly basis.  I currently work for a local government consulting firm and serve as a communications/change mgmt consultant.  I love the urban lifestyle, and enjoy trying new restaurants, mentoring in Anacostia, and of course learning/meeting new people!

Anna - I work for Target as an HR manager. I am currently working towards my degree in HR Management at UMUC. My husband, David, and I live in Gaithersburg with our cat. I ran my first half-marathon this spring and I training for another that will take place in September 2010.

John - I am from NY and now live in Alexandria VA. I am a pharmacologist and toxicologist and work for EPA, I have 2 doctorates in these fields. I read the NY times....my favorite newspaper. I enjoy nonfiction in particular, and some poetry and classical literature.

Betsy - I am a painter (former attorney) and also occasionally write for the Post. My website is http://www.betsykarasik.com/

Ashley - I am a mid-twenties professional. I graduated from college with a BS in physics and math from Dickinson College in 2006 and moved to DC that fall. I currently work for a contractor doing cost estimating for the Marine Corps. I enjoyed my liberal arts classes in college and miss the opportunity to discuss books and ideas with other people. I tend to read a lot of non-fiction (memoirs, social science books, etc.) My favorite book in high school was either 1984 or The Great Gatsby, though I don’t really have a favorite anymore, too many options...

Sam - Originally from Chicago. I like to play soccer and kickball. I work at a radio station.

Adrienne - An Arizona native, I moved to D.C. in 2004. I work as a writer/editor at American University, where I also earned my master's in criminology. I enjoy reading (strictly nonfiction), running, ASU football and Caps hockey. Coffee, shoes and good Mexican food are among my weaknesses. I live in Silver Spring with my husband Sam and our cat, Henry.

Dianne - I am pleased to find a book club that focuses on non-fiction. I especially like memoirs and biographies. One book I enjoyed this year was "No One Would Listen" by Harry Markopolos, the whistleblower who tried to alert the government about the Madoff ponzi scheme. Currently I'm listening to "Losing My Cool: How a Father's Love and 15,000 Books Beat Hip-Hop Culture" by Thomas Chatterton Williams. I live in Alexandria, VA. I love cities, especially New York, but also enjoy hiking in National Parks out west. Traveling for my job and renovating my house (my kitchen and bath are currently torn up) has kept me from these activities, but I'm looking forward to 2011 and having more time for reading, travel, hiking, museums, and being sociable.

Claudine- I am a collage artist, author & illustrator.  In my business I wear many hats: I create custom artworks for clients using their family photos. I license my illustrations to companies who put them on everything from greeting cards to calendars, to various home and gift products. I have a line of artist quality paints & products under the brand name of Claudine Hellmuth Studio and I have written 3 books about my techniques and travel the US and abroad teaching creative workshops.   In case you are interested in my other book suggestions:  http://www.librarything.com/catalog/claudinehellmuth/yourlibrary
